Working the Graveyard Shift 2010

Work continues on the 2010 Halloween display at the Meister House. We decided to move the graveyard from the side to the front of the house. Once setup is complete, we’ll use a small FM transmitter to allow people driving by to listen in on the show, which will be setup to run daily between 7 to 9pm.

The lightshow is run using a D-Light 16 channel controller hooked up to a small home-built PC running AuroraShow.

New Consumption Habits in an Instant World?

I’ve noticed that I’ve developed a new habit thanks to the Watch Instantly featue from Netflix. Now that I can log in and immediately watch a growing number of movies, I find myself bringing up favorite titles and scrolling through to a favorite scene as a quick pick-me-up throughout the day. My current guilty pleasure is Down Periscope.

In the days of VHS tapes, fast forwarding or rewinding to a favorite part not only took time, but it put a lot of wear and tear on the tape itself. DVDs helped in that you could instantly load a particular scene, but still required you to not only own the movie, but to go through the physical process of locating the disc and inserting it into your player. That’s all changed in the age of streaming media.

As more of our media starts streaming in from the cloud rather from discs in our CD, DVD or Blu-ray players, I’m starting to wonder what other consumption habits will change. With Napster allowing me to listen to just about any song I can think of nearly instantly, I’ve certainly found that my listening habits have become very scatter-shot when it comes to bands and genres.

I Survived 2010’s E3

This week thousands of game industry insiders (and a few outsiders) met in Los Angeles, California for the 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo. Running from June 15th through the 17th, it was three days full of giant convention displays filled by equally giant videogame companies showing off both their latest releases, as well as upcoming game titles and hardware.

I was there in the middle of the gaming chaos to help with coverage for this month’s online issue of Best Buy On. Helping to cover the show with photos and articles meant a lot of running around the convention floor, which can be a lot of work, but it also meant I was pretty much guaranteed to see just about every part of the show floor. I even had a number of opportunities to stop and talk with the smaller companies who came with hopes of attracting new fans to their products, as well as see some “unique” hardware accessories that were shown along with the big show stoppers.

Even though it was my first time at E3, I had a blast, and can’t wait until next year. In the meantime, check out the rest of the Best Buy On E3 coverage.

It’s Good to be a Geek … Geek Pride Day 2010

It’s always fun to talk about something as clearly important as Geek Pride Day, which I did on The Robin Swoboda Show on Cleveland’s Fox 8 today.

Sometimes, you just need to flaunt your pride in your Geekmobile, you know?

Rock and Roll in New York City

I had one of those “once in a lifetime” trips this week when I went to New York City for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 2010 Inception Ceremony. This year being the 25th inception ceremony made it even more special.

Although you never seem to have enough time while there, visiting various sites around New York, such as Grand Central Station and Times Square, were as great as you’d expect. I look forward to visiting again to see more, though I doubt I’ll ever see “everything” the city has to offer.
