New Doctor Who
The BBC seems to be reporting that Doctor Who will be returning next year and Christopher Eccleston will be starring.
A surreal Battlefield Vietnam moment …
Standing in a side alley on the streets of Hue and hearing the faint lyrics of “Surfin Bird” drifting down the road.
As the approaching sounds became louder, I edged around the corner to take a quick look, and watched a single enemy trooper ride by on his little scooter. For some reason the visual of a battle hardened trooper riding through the dangerous war torn streets on a little moped made me laugh.
Of course, stepping out onto the street and using my shoulder launched RPG to send him and his little scooter straight to hell only added to my amusement at the absurdity of it all.
Another surreal Battlefield Vietnam moment …
Watching a stolen M113 troop transport full of NVA soldiers slowly rumbling towards the main US base, only to suddenly be snatched up by the cargo hook of a Heuy which proceeded to drop the transport, James Bond You Only Live Twice-style, into the water a ways down the road.
Linux UT2004 text-to-speech …
For the Linux using UT2004 users out there looking to get text-to-speech working might want to download and install speechd.
Once installed, you’ll need to edit the UT2004.ini file in your /ut2004/System directory. Locate the line containing “TextToSpeechFile=” and add “/dev/speech”. You’ll need to run speechd prior to starting UT2004, of course, and then enable the text-to-speech feature within the in-game settings.
Unfortunately, there seems to be no clean way to stop the speechd service, so you’ll probably have to do a “killall speechd” as well as “killall festival-server”.
