It looks like Google is taking another “bottoms up” approach to the search engine market with their latest entry in the subject-specific search field, Undergoos.com.

Never before has the “I’m feeling lucky” link been so scary.

Doctor Who to Return Without Eccleston

Thursday, March 31st, 2005

After nearly a decade of waiting for development in bringing back Doctor Who to television, fans of the series have been hit with a number of news items, both positive and negative.

In light of the first episode’s positive press and a ratings figure that pushed to nearly ten million (nearly 40% of the total possible viewers at that time tuned in), the BBC has announced that there will be both a Christmas special and a second season of the new series, making it the 28th season of Doctor Who.

Unfortunately, this bit of good news was tempered by the announcement that Christopher Eccleston has chosen not to return for the new series due to fears of being typecast, but will appear in the Christmas special. Since it’s rumored that the season finale will end in a cliffhanger in which the Doctor appears to die or be dying in the process of saving Rose, the Christmas episode will no doubt feature the regeneration of the 9th Doctor into the 10th with a “rebirth” theme fitting for the holiday season.

The BBC has confirmed that it’s currently in talks with actor David Tennant, who’s currently staring in BBC 3s series Casanova, which is another project of Doctor Who’s executive producer and writer Russell T Davies. The BBC has stated, however, that Billy Piper will be returning as Rose Tyler.

‘Wrong Race’ Hairstyle Banned

Wednesday, March 30th, 2005

Olivia ActonManchester News has a story up about a british teenager sent home from school because a school official decided that the thirteen-year old girl’s braided hair was inappropriate for someone not of afro-caribbean race.

The article notes that two other students at the school who are of afro-caribbean descent are permitted to wear the hair style described as “too extreme” by school officials because it’s part of their cultural heritage.

The school’s head teacher, Allison Crompton, admits that such hairstyles are normally not allowed, but exceptions are made when school staff believe the style is cultural rather than fashion-based. Ms. Crompton is quoted as saying, “if we didn’t allow some leeway for their cultural and ethnic background I think it would probably be discriminatory”

Equal Time for Creationism

Wednesday, March 30th, 2005

Normally I really dislike March because it brings April issues of magazines filled with tired attempts at April Fools humor that simply gets in the way of more interesting content, but the April issue of Scientific American really goes against this sad trend.
